Where
A wonderful 14th Century building and fascinating museum in the heart of Evesham.

Located in the riverside town of Evesham, The Almonry Museum and Heritage Centre dates back to the 14th Century when it was home to the Almoner of the Evesham’s 8th Century Benedictine Abbey. The Almoner was responsible for distributing alms to the poor. Sadly, the Almonry, a bell tower, two churches and a cloister arch are all that survive from what was said to be the third largest abbey in all of England.  Today the building houses a small but fascinating museum and the Evesham tourist information centre.

This rambling historic house, with its uneven floors and low doorways, is an excellent example of early English architecture and has a beautiful walled back garden just perfect for rest and relaxation. If you explorer a little further you will likely find an original cannon from the Crimean war and as well as a fairground galloper.

The Almonry museum has an excellent section on the history of Evesham but is also home to an eccentric collection of artefacts dating as far back as prehistoric times with a focus on science and history. Spread over 12 rooms, the displays feature the battle of Evesham, the original Benedictine abbey, 18th century attire and even Anglo-Saxon burial artefacts.  Don’t miss the remarkable and ornately carved 14th-century chair that once belonged to the he Abbot of Evesham.

The heritage centre has developed a lovely programme for children who are encouraged to explorer.  During the school holidays there are fun packs available children that bring the centre to life with activities, trails and puzzles.

Access to the Almonry is through the Tourist information centre where you can buy tickets.
