The Evesham Vale Light Railway in Worcestershire is definitely a favourite with children but also fun for the whole family. Located next to the Evesham Valley shopping area it usually operates at weekends and during school holidays.
The beautiful light steam trains start from Twyford Downs Station next to the main Car Park. The 15 inch (381 mm) gauge tracks run for about a mile through the Apple Orchard, tunnel and Country Park before stopping at Evesham Vale Station where there is children’s play area that includes a mock fort, picnic area and countryside walks. If you’ve bought a return ticket then you can then complete the loop or catch a later train back to the main station. Trains generally run every half an hour.
The railway has been operating since 2002 and now has three working steam locomotives known as Dougal, St Egwin and Monty. These wonderful little engines pull a range of passenger coaches including fully enclosed saloon carriages ideal for experiencing the ride. As the trains pull out of Twyford Downs Station they pass the engine shed and workshops that have been built to match the period.
