Worcestershire’s open air museum of heritage buildings
Situated on the outskirts of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings is dedicated to preserving historic buildings that have had to be removed from their original locations. The first open air museum to be established in England, it is now home to more than 30 historic buildings that were rescued from demolition and painstakingly reconstructed in the grounds of the museum.
Amongst the collection of buildings is a fully working windmill, a post WWII Arcon V prefabricated house, an 18th Century toll house and even an underground ice house relocated from Tong in Shropshire. The site was first opened in 1967 and, in addition to the collection of heritage buildings it also includes a wildflower meadow, a traditional cider and perry orchard and period gardens.
Avoncroft museum also features and excellent teashop and a remarkable collection of British telephone boxes. Conferences and events can be held in the substantial Guesten Hall and the lovely Victorian church was re-dedicated in 1996 and is licensed to hold services during the open season and perform wedding blessings. Avoncroft Museum has an extensive calendar of events and stages exceptional open days from ‘Halloween adventures’ to ‘WWII commemorative exhibitions’.
