A beautiful swan sanctuary right in the heart of Worcester.
For many years the area on the River Severn between the railway viaduct and the Worcester Cathedral Ferry has been designated as a Swan Sanctuary. There is now a large and healthy population of Mute Swans on the water. These swans have become an integral part of the makeup of the city and are relatively comfortable around people. Fishing in this area is banned and the swans are supported by a number of organisations including the City Council and the volunteer led ‘Swan Food Project’. The natural beauty and general friendliness of these swans has made them a wonderful sight to see when visiting Worcester.
As there is little in the way of natural food for swans in Worcester, they rely on the people of Worcester and visitors to feed them. To supplement the bread they are given, a local voluntary project provides small handy bags of floating swan pellets as well as sacks of pellets for those feeding frequently. Funds raised by the project provide mixed corn.
The small bags of pellets can be bought at Worcester Cathedral gift shop, Brown’s at S. Quay, Cafe Severn on Croft Road, Cafe Afloat and Jandco in Diglis Basin, Birch Hill Dog Rescue in Reindeer Court, Pump House Environment Centre in Gheluvelt Park, indoor meetings in Worcester of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, and two outlets in Bewdley: Grays the Sweetshop and Merchants Fish Bar. Swans are protected by The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. They are wild birds. It is illegal to harm them in any way, or interfere with their nests and eggs.
