A brief history of the Arley Arboretum

In the early 1800s, Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Mountnorris put all his passion for botany and his know-how to plan the Arboretum on the banks of the magnificent River Severn at Upper Arley. The garden grew rapidly, and by the 1940’s it hosted a remarkable number of tropical trees and exotic plants.
After changing various owners over a century, the estate was purchased by Roger Turner. The midlands industrialist invested substantial funds to renovate the Arboretum and modernize it. The construction of 27 new houses and a Sports & Social Club enhanced the garden’s facilities and appeal.
In 1999, after Roger Turner’s death, the Arley Arboretum and the surrounding estate became the property of the Roger and Douglas Turner Charitable Trust.
In 2002, the Arley Arboretum & Gardens opened the doors to the public and quickly became one of the biggest attractions in Worcestershire.
